News writing

I worked for five years at newspapers in Wyoming and Idaho, writing more than 1,000 bylined articles. Four of those years were as the high school sports coordinator at the Casper (Wyoming) Star-Tribune. Some of the award-winning articles include:

  • Hardwood reflections: In 2009, I wrote a series of nine stories about high school basketball in Wyoming. This series finished as an honorable mention (top 10 nationally) in the Associated Press Sports Editors under-40,000 circulation division in project reporting. The series focused on Beth Morgan of Torrington; Tony Selph of Lander; Mark Curry of Gillette; Shannon Brown of St. Stephens; Hilary Michelena of Arvada-Clearmont; the players of the LaGrange Longhorns basketball dynasty; Alfred Redman of Arapaho Charter; the winless Rawlins girls team; and three former high school players united by fate.
  • Option, right: In 2009, I wrote a story about the development of six-man football in Wyoming. The story finished in fifth place nationally in the Associated Press Sports Editors under-40,000 circulation division in explanatory reporting.
  • Unfortunate reality: In 2007, I wrote a series of stories about racism encountered by high school athletes from the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming. Only one story is available online. The story won first place in the Wyoming Press Association’s sports news category for 2006.

I also wrote for the Idaho Falls (Idaho) Post Register and the Gillette (Wyoming) News-Record.

High school sports

I began work on wyoming-football.com, a website devoted to the history of Wyoming high school football, in 2004. I alone have been responsible for the site’s development and upkeep. The responsibilities have included writing for the site’s blog; maintaining and updating the site; and researching game results, coaches and records. Also, from 2012-2024, I wrote football previews for the Wyoming High School Preview Guide Magazine for every team in the state.

I also run wyoming-basketball.com and champlists.com, sites devoted to Wyoming high school sports history.

Books

I have self-published two books. The most recent book is “Poke Pioneers,” which covers the first 50 years of football at the University of Wyoming. It was produced with the help of the Lola Homsher Research Grant from the Wyoming Historical Society. It published in 2025.

I also wrote “A Century of Fridays,” a book covering the history of Wyoming high school football. The second and final edition was published in 2020.

Podcasts/vidcasts

My wife and I are the co-creators of “TP For Your Earholes,” a podcast devoted to the various iterations of the TV show “Beavis and Butt-head.” The podcast launched in the summer of 2025.

We also worked together on the YouTube series “Babble For Five,” which focused on the 1990s sci-fi TV show “Babylon 5.” We produced 129 episodes between 2018 and 2021.

Freelance writing

My freelance work has been published by the website wyofile.com, the Salt Lake (Utah) Tribune, the Sioux Falls (S.D.) Argus Leader and the Casper (Wyo.) Star-Tribune. My most recent story was a longform profile on former Cokeville football coach Todd Dayton (August 2023.) For Casper, my freelance work included a story on the decline in scoring in high school basketball (December 2013), a story and research on the state’s track and field records (May 2014), and a story on the team that has Wyoming’s longest football winning streak (August 2014).

Page design

In addition to my responsibilities as a writer, I also designed pages for the sports sections of the Star-Tribune and Post Register. Click the thumbnail to see a larger version.
